AI Coding Tools Roundup: Claude Code 2.1.291, Copilot CLI 1.0.92 and Codex 0.160.1

Today's AI coding news is about shipping details rather than headline launches. Claude Code released 2.1.290 and 2.1.291 (see the official changelog), GitHub Copilot CLI shipped 1.0.92, and OpenAI Codex published 0.160.1.

Claude Code 2.1.290 and 2.1.291

Version 2.1.290 is a large release. The main additions:

  • /claude-api managed-agents-onboard <url> sets up the Managed Agents pattern a page describes, and it can also build a Console quickstart template such as deep-researcher with the ant CLI.
  • claude attach <name> and claude logs <name> now accept part of a session name instead of the full id.
  • Plugin hooks gained agentId on the tool.check event, so a hook can tell a subagent's permission check from the main session's, plus serverToolUses on turn.step results.
  • Managed settings got new warnings: a link pointing outside the managed settings folder, and ignored sandbox allowRead paths or allowed domains now show in /status and doctor.
  • WebFetch no longer silently drops page text past 100,000 characters. It reports how much was unread and takes an offset to continue.

The release also fixes scheduled tasks (/loop and reminders) not returning after a compacted resume, several MCP and permission-rule enforcement gaps, and a crash on deeply nested lists. Version 2.1.291 followed the same day with two regression fixes: cloud sessions dropping answers to permission prompts, and the last messages of a session being lost on quit. If you are on 2.1.290 or 2.1.288, update. Release history is also tracked on Releasebot.

GitHub Copilot CLI 1.0.92

Released October 5, 1.0.92 adds copilot config subcommands for managing settings and an environment picker (Ctrl+E) for switching between local and cloud runs. Shell output now streams stdout and stderr live in the timeline, and the sandbox no longer exposes ambient GitHub tokens unless you configure them explicitly. The previous release, 1.0.91, added copilot sandbox ca commands for certificate trust. For model news, including deprecations scheduled for October 19, watch the GitHub Copilot changelog.

OpenAI Codex 0.160.1

The stable 0.160.1 release is a small fix: Codex now preserves SYSTEMROOT, TEMP and TMP when launching remote stdio MCP servers, which matters for Windows environment variables passed through to MCP servers. Alpha builds toward 0.161 and 0.162 are shipping daily.

OpenCode and Gemini CLI

OpenCode's latest release is v1.18.34 from September 30 (session identity headers on model requests, macOS signing fixes), with no new release in the last day despite many merged pull requests. Gemini CLI continues on a nightly cadence, with recent fixes for process and CPU hangs. The AI CLI Tools Digest is a handy daily overview of these projects.

What to do

  1. Update Claude Code to 2.1.291 to avoid the two 2.1.28x/2.1.290 regressions.
  2. If you run Codex with remote MCP servers on Windows, upgrade to 0.160.1.
  3. Check your Copilot model choices ahead of the October 19 deprecations.
