AI Coding Tools Roundup: Copilot Debuts HydraFusion Multi-Model Mode as Claude Code Ships 2.1.286

The headline today is GitHub Copilot's experiment with using several models on a single task. HydraFusion in VS Code and the GitHub Copilot app was updated on September 30, and Claude Code 2.1.286 shipped a batch of stability fixes the same day.
GitHub Copilot HydraFusion: Multiple Models, One Turn
According to the GitHub changelog, HydraFusion is a research preview that treats workflow selection as an optimization problem. For each request it picks one of three approaches:
- Single: one model solves the task directly.
- Cascade: an efficient model drafts a solution, and it escalates to a stronger model only if the draft misses the quality bar.
- Critique: one model drafts, an independent model reviews, and the original model revises based on that feedback.
This differs from the Auto model, which picks a single model per request; HydraFusion coordinates multiple models and workflows inside one conversation turn. The latest update adds more transparency into what happens at each step, real-time progress updates and clearer status indicators on long tasks.
It requires VS Code 1.140 or later or the GitHub Copilot desktop app, and you enable it through settings or the model picker. It is available on Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business and Enterprise; Business and Enterprise need an administrator to approve preview features.
Claude Code 2.1.286: Resume, Auth and Permission Fixes
The Claude Code changelog lists version 2.1.286 from September 30. Highlights:
- A permission prompt counter (for example "2 of 5") when several requests are stacked.
- Mouse support for list navigation in fullscreen mode.
- Fixes for
gcpAuthRefreshandawsAuthRefreshcredential expiration issues. - Fixed
claude --resumeand--continuelosing turns after parallel tool calls. - Fixed API errors when tools return non-text objects, cloud sessions with large histories failing to wake, and Remote Control sessions not disconnecting when org policy disables the feature.
It follows 2.1.285 (plugin configuration and a WebFetch kill switch), covered in the September 30 roundup.
OpenAI Codex: CLI 0.159.3 Is a Small Security Nudge
The Codex releases page shows 0.159.3 as the latest stable build (September 30). It lets eligible local sessions signed in with ChatGPT receive optional reminders to finish account security setup. Alpha builds of 0.160 and 0.161 are appearing, so a larger release is likely soon.
OpenCode v1.18.34
The OpenCode releases list v1.18.34 from September 30. It sends namespaced session and parent-session identity headers with model requests, and improves macOS binary signing. A maintenance release rather than a feature drop.
What It Means for Developers
- Copilot users on a supported plan can try HydraFusion on tasks where a second model's critique is worth the extra cost; treat it as a preview.
- Claude Code users who rely on resuming sessions should update to 2.1.286 to avoid lost turns.
- Copilot admins should decide whether to approve preview features for Business and Enterprise seats.
