AI Coding Tools Roundup: Claude Code 2.1.319, Codex 0.167, OpenCode 2.2.6 and Copilot in Xcode

Executive Summary

  • Claude Code 2.1.319 moves long-running MCP tool calls to the background and adds permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting for unattended runs.
  • Claude Code also deprecated fast mode for Opus 4.8. It is removed on November 30, 2026, and requests then return an error with no fallback.
  • Codex 0.167 adds an agent command center, a backend switcher in the session picker and a Vertex AI setup wizard.
  • OpenCode 2.2.6 lets MCP servers share one connection across projects and adds opencode run -w for worktree runs.
  • GitHub Copilot reaches JetBrains Air and Xcode (public preview), adds Agent Merge, and VS Code 1.145 brings cron-based local automations.

Claude Code 2.1.319: background MCP calls and stricter permissions

The Claude Code changelog lists three releases this week. The biggest change is in 2.1.319 (November 6).

  • MCP tasks in the terminal. Long-running MCP tool calls now move to the background, and Claude is told the result when they finish. Set CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MCP_TASK_BACKGROUND if you want the old behavior of waiting inside the tool call.
  • permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting. A tool call that would wait on a permission prompt is denied and the turn continues. This is useful for CI and scheduled runs where nobody is there to click.
  • Auto mode change. When telemetry or feature flags are off, including behind LLM gateways, calls the server can't check are asked about or denied. Set CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_SERVER=0 to keep the built-in classifier.

    "denyInsteadOfPrompting": true

}

Earlier in the week, 2.1.318 (November 4) stopped installing or updating the IDE extension when Claude Code starts inside an IDE terminal (use /ide from an outside terminal), moved background subagent shell commands to the background after 3 minutes so the prompt cache doesn't expire, and added loginExpiresAt to claude auth status. 2.1.317 (November 3) made messages to running background agents arrive sooner and made subagents on a different model use that model's own effort level.

Deadline: Opus 4.8 fast mode ends November 30

Version 2.1.316 deprecated fast mode for Opus 4.8 on October 30. It is removed on November 30, 2026. After that, fast mode requests on Opus 4.8 return an error instead of falling back to standard Opus 4.8. The changelog recommends moving to Opus 5.5 to keep the speedup. If your scripts or settings pin Opus 4.8 with fast mode, change them this month.

OpenAI Codex 0.167: an agent command center

The openai/codex releases page shows 0.167.0 as the latest stable build (November 6), with 0.168 and 0.169 alphas already out and no notes for them.

  • Agent command center via codex agents --no-daemon, which marks unread results so you can track several agents at once.
  • Backend switching from the terminal session picker, with drafts kept.
  • Image attachments preview while you compose, and viewed image paths are clickable.
  • Vertex AI setup through an optional wizard.
  • System proxy support on macOS and Windows as an experimental option.
  • Fixes for saved chats after switching model providers, Ctrl+L clearing and network approval prompts.

OpenCode 2.2.6: pooled MCP and worktree runs

The OpenCode releases page shows v2.2.6 on November 6.

  • Shared MCP connections. Setting pool: true on an MCP server shares one connection across projects with the same setup, which cuts duplicate server processes.
  • opencode run -w starts a scripted session in a new git worktree.
  • opencode run --archived keeps CI and scripted sessions out of your session lists.
  • opencode run now waits for background shells, subagents and image jobs before it exits.
  • GUI plugins can add themes and code-block actions, and phones and tablets get a touch composer dock.

The previous release, v2.2.5 (October 30), added a configurable compaction buffer, for example "compaction": { "buffer": "20%" }, which reserves part of each model's context window.

GitHub Copilot: Xcode, JetBrains Air and Agent Merge

The Copilot weekly release for November 2 (posted November 6) covers several surfaces.

  • JetBrains Air. Copilot is available in JetBrains Air, so you can track multiple agent sessions and run tasks locally or in the cloud through Air Teams, using your existing subscription.
  • Xcode. Copilot works in Xcode's built-in coding assistant, in public preview starting with Xcode 27.3 beta.
  • Agent Merge. Set it up from a pull request and Copilot merges when it is ready, staying enabled while required checks or rules are pending.
  • Copilot app. Pull request reviewer tools, context-limit compaction, CSV and TSV table views, bulk session pinning, and opt-in assisted approval for local sessions.
  • Copilot CLI. A new /settings dashboard covers plugins, MCP servers and other settings, with search.
  • VS Code 1.145. Local automations accept cron expressions and workspace custom agents. There are also experimental chat view modes, remote app previews and canvases, and more ways to attach outside files.

The post lists no model deprecations. Some third-party trackers mention a model removal on November 16, but I could not confirm it from GitHub's own notice, so check the GitHub changelog before acting on it.

What I would do this week

  1. Search your scripts and settings for Opus 4.8 fast mode and plan the move before November 30.
  2. If you run Claude Code in CI, try permissions.denyInsteadOfPrompting so a stray prompt can't stall a job.
  3. If you run several projects with the same MCP servers in OpenCode, turn on pool: true.
  4. Try Codex's agent command center if you keep more than one long task running.
