Codex 0.167 Adds an Agent Command Center as Copilot Expands Usage Metrics
Part of AI Coding Tools News, a daily series.

Executive Summary
- OpenAI Codex 0.167.0 (Nov 6) adds an agent command center, backend switching from the session picker, and a Google Cloud Vertex AI setup wizard.
- GitHub Copilot extends its usage metrics API with code review acceptance data and telemetry and version mismatch flags (Nov 5).
- Claude Code 2.1.316 to 2.1.318 focus on gateway governance, subagent effort control, and a privacy prompt before your account email goes to the network. Fast mode for Opus 4.8 is on a removal clock.
- OpenCode 2.2.4 and 2.2.5 add opt-in artifacts, worktree shortcuts, and fixes for large MCP messages and model switching.
OpenAI Codex 0.167.0: an agent command center
The Codex release page lists 0.167.0 as the latest stable build, published November 6. The headline is the agent command center, started with codex agents --no-daemon. It tracks your running agents and marks the ones with unread output, which matters once you run several tasks at the same time.
codex agents --no-daemonOther changes in this release:
- Backend switching: you can move between connected backends from the session picker and keep your draft.
- Image previews: local image attachments preview in the composer on terminals that support it.
- Vertex AI: Google Cloud Vertex AI setup appears under "Sign in another way". It is gated behind the
gcp_setup_wizardflag. - Proxy support: an opt-in in
/experimentaluses macOS or Windows system proxy settings. - Fixes: saved chats no longer disappear after a model provider change, and
Ctrl+Lclears the screen while keeping history.
My take: the command center is the real signal. Every terminal agent is converging on a "manage many sessions" view, and Codex now has one in the open. The Vertex option also helps teams that must keep model traffic inside a Google Cloud project.
GitHub Copilot: richer usage metrics
The GitHub Changelog has two Copilot entries from November 5. The usage metrics API now includes code review data, including how often Copilot's suggested changes are accepted. It also adds flags that surface telemetry and version mismatches, so admins can see which developers run outdated clients or send incomplete data.
Earlier this week GitHub also covered Copilot in Xcode (Nov 4) and JetBrains Air (Nov 3), plus usage API coverage for bring-your-own-key and custom enterprise models (Nov 3). I covered those in the November 5 roundup.
If you report on Copilot ROI, the acceptance rate for review suggestions is a better number than raw completions. Pull it into your dashboard now.
Claude Code 2.1.316 to 2.1.318
The Claude Code changelog shows three builds in a row. The changelog gives no release dates for them. I covered 2.1.318 in the November 4 roundup, so here is the part worth keeping in view:
- 2.1.318:
assume_roleformantleupstreams on the Claude apps gateway, aneffortoption for a mod's$.model.fork, and sign-in expiry shown inclaude auth status. - 2.1.317: Claude Code now asks before a web or shell tool call sends your account email to the network.
/schedulewarns when a new cloud task gets connectors you did not request. The Read tool's "file unchanged" stub is gone, so rereads return content. - 2.1.316:
CLAUDE_CODE_SUBAGENT_EFFORTsets subagent effort,CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_ULTRATHINKturns off the keyword, and the gateway gets pooled group budgets and alayeredpolicy mode.
Deadline: per the notes, fast mode for Opus 4.8 is deprecated as of October 30, 2026 and removed on November 30, 2026. After that those requests return an error, so check any scripts that pin it.
OpenCode 2.2.4 and 2.2.5
The OpenCode releases page shows v2.2.4 and v2.2.5, both on October 30, and a process-daemon v0.5.0 package on November 5.
- Desktop terminals now belong to the session and keep scrollback across server restarts.
- Artifacts are opt-in through
experimental.artifacts. - Schedules run under
opencode serveand fire only once across several server processes. - New worktree and base-branch shortcuts, and
compaction.bufferaccepts a percentage such as "20%". - MCP servers sending stdio messages over 10 MiB no longer disconnect, and switching models no longer turns reasoning into plain text.
- Calls to a tool named
bashnow run asshellwith the same permissions.
What to do today
- Update Codex to 0.167.0 and try
codex agents --no-daemonon a multi-task workflow. - Add Copilot code review acceptance to your usage reports.
- Search your scripts for Opus 4.8 fast mode before November 30.
- If you use OpenCode with large MCP payloads, upgrade to 2.2.5.
