AI Coding News: July 8, 2026 — Claude's ID Verification Goes Live, OpenCode Ships v1.17.15

Two stories define today's AI coding news: Anthropic's identity verification requirement for Claude officially takes effect, and OpenCode quietly ships another point release. Neither is a repeat of yesterday's Fable 5 billing switch — this is what's actually new on July 8, 2026.
Claude's Identity Verification Goes Live
As of today, Anthropic's updated privacy policy is in effect, and identity verification through third-party provider Persona Identities has moved from a limited trial into general rollout for consumer Claude plans. This is separate from yesterday's Fable 5 usage-credits switch — that was a billing change, this is an identity-and-safety layer, and it lands on its own July 8 timeline. Anthropic first flagged the policy update on June 17, and outlets including TechCrunch have been tracking it since.
Verification applies only to Claude Free, Pro, and Max accounts — the consumer tiers accessed through claude.ai and Anthropic's mobile apps. Team, Enterprise, and the developer API/platform are explicitly exempt, so nothing changes for Claude Code, Claude Agent SDK, or any pipeline calling the Messages API directly. Per Anthropic's own Help Center article, flagged users are asked to submit a physical government-issued photo ID (passport, driver's license, or national ID) plus a live selfie captured with liveness detection. The process is designed to take under five minutes, and Anthropic says the images are held by Persona rather than copied into Anthropic's own systems.
Anthropic frames this as fraud, abuse, and age-safety enforcement rather than a Fable 5-specific gate, but the timing isn't coincidental — Gizmodo and Tech Times both connect it to the same export-control scrutiny that forced Fable 5 offline last month. Anthropic maintains it does not use verification data to train models, and that the ID/selfie data exists only to confirm identity and satisfy legal obligations. If you build on Claude but stay on the API or a business plan, there's nothing to do today — but if you or teammates use Claude.ai personally, expect a verification prompt on your next flagged session.
OpenCode Ships v1.17.15
A day after v1.17.14 introduced the code-mode MCP adapter, OpenCode v1.17.15 landed on July 7 with smaller but useful fixes:
- Better classification of Z.ai context-window overflow errors, so oversized requests surface the correct failure mode instead of a generic error.
- More resilient handling when a configuration directory is unavailable while reading config files.
- Desktop: restored model picker tooltips, refreshed command palette styling, terminal shortcuts now take priority when the terminal is focused, unread indicators on tabs with pending questions, session tab titles that persist through reloads, theme changes applied only after explicit selection, and a macOS Sequoia titlebar/traffic-light fix.
Also Worth Knowing
- Claude Code is holding steady at v2.1.202 (shipped July 6) — no new build today, so the dynamic workflow-size setting and fast single-pass /review remain the latest changes.
- Fable 5's metered billing, which we covered yesterday, is now fully in effect — usage credits at $10/$50 per million input/output tokens are required for every Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscriber who wants continued access. Early cost reports, including a $173 single-prompt bill, are pushing teams toward Opus 4.8 or Sonnet 5 for cost-controlled agentic work.
