Why I recommend this.
Cloudflare R2 is an excellent choice if you’re currently paying significant AWS S3 egress fees. Its core advantage is zero egress cost, which fundamentally changes storage economics for bandwidth-heavy workloads.
Because R2 is S3 API–compatible, you can typically reuse existing tooling, SDKs, and workflows with minimal changes, making migration relatively straightforward. This compatibility lowers the risk and effort of switching away from S3.
R2’s globally distributed architecture helps deliver low-latency access to stored objects for users around the world, which is especially valuable for media-heavy applications, downloads, and public assets.
If your project serves large volumes of files or media to end users—such as video streaming, image hosting, software downloads, or static site assets—R2 can dramatically reduce infrastructure costs by eliminating egress charges while still providing scalable, S3-like object storage.
