Git Worktrees Go Mainstream: Codex 0.162, OpenCode 2.0.27 and Copilot in VS Code

Running several coding agents at once only works if their file changes stay apart. This week three tools converged on the same answer: Git worktrees. OpenAI Codex and OpenCode both added managed worktree tools, and GitHub Copilot in VS Code now lets you watch parallel sessions in a grid and clean up the worktrees they leave behind. Claude Code also shipped hook hardening that matters if you run agents unattended.

OpenAI Codex 0.162: managed worktrees and pinned tasks

According to the Codex release notes, version 0.162.0 (October 8) is the main release of the week. It adds managed Git worktree tools for trusted projects and lets you pin tasks in the agent Command Center, so one task's edits do not bleed into another's. It also adds /copy and Ctrl+Insert for transcript copy and navigation, clickable URLs across many TUI prompts, live web access and remote compaction settings for custom model providers, and opt-in ranked tool search in Code Mode.

The fixes are practical too: Codex now preserves CRLF line endings in apply_patch, honors server Retry-After advice, and starts the Linux sandbox correctly when several files are denied. Version 0.162.1 (October 9) followed with a TUI crash fix and a startup fix for mismatched background-server settings. Alpha builds of 0.163.0 are already out.

OpenCode 2.0.27: worktree tools and a safer remote pairing flow

The OpenCode changelog lists v2.0.27 on October 12. Code Mode can now create, list and remove Git worktrees, and removing one requires edit approval. The first opencode pair --remote now warns that it will expose your server and asks for confirmation; --yes skips the prompt for scripts.

Other changes: Chrome and Edge can install the OpenCode web app, including behind authenticating proxies; desktop and TUI timelines show execution errors that occur between model steps; Vertex AI gained routes for Interactions and Mistral models; and Code Mode's fetch can no longer read file:// URLs. The prior release, v2.0.26 (October 8), added Google Cloud credentials for Vertex in /connect, lighter and faster session snapshots, and clickable links throughout transcripts.

Note that the 1.x line is still published on the OpenCode GitHub releases page (v1.19.0 on October 11 added opencode upgrade --major), so check which line you are on before upgrading.

GitHub Copilot and VS Code 1.141: parallel sessions you can actually see

GitHub's Copilot weekly releases for October 5 describe two VS Code 1.141 changes that fit the worktree theme. The Agents window can show multiple sessions side by side in a grid, which helps when comparing results or tracking several tasks. A new "Open worktree cleanup" option in chat shows how much disk space inactive session worktrees use and lets you choose which to remove.

The same notes add support for using one GitHub account for your Copilot license and another for repositories in the Copilot app, and Copilot CLI's /model command can now discover models from a running local Ollama instance. Local sandboxing and Claude Haiku 5.5 availability were covered in yesterday's roundup.

Claude Code 2.1.295: hooks that fail closed

The Claude Code changelog shows 2.1.295 added onFailure: "block" for command and HTTP hooks. A hook that fails to start, times out or exits unexpectedly then blocks the action instead of letting it through. It also adds Program Status Protocol (OSC 7501) support so terminals can show whether Claude Code is working, waiting or done, backs off repeated remote MCP reconnects up to 30 seconds, and fixes requests failing on [1m] models when a gateway refuses the context-1m beta. Version 2.1.296, which we covered yesterday, remains the latest.

What to do this week

  • Parallel agent users: give each agent task its own worktree instead of one shared checkout, and prune old ones.
  • Codex users: update to 0.162.1 and try pinned tasks with managed worktrees in a trusted project.
  • Claude Code users running unattended hooks: add onFailure: "block" to security-relevant hooks.
  • OpenCode users: confirm whether you are on 1.x or 2.x before running an upgrade.
