Claude Code 2.1.307 and 2.1.308, Codex 0.164 Alphas: October 22 Roundup

Today's news is centered on Claude Code, which went from 2.1.306 to 2.1.308 in a day according to its GitHub releases page. Codex only shipped alpha builds, OpenCode has nothing newer than 1.19.3, and GitHub's only changelog entry on October 21 is not about Copilot.

Claude Code 2.1.307: telemetry, API version and MCP fixes

Version 2.1.307 (October 21) has two additions. The /claude-api api-version command moves Claude API code to API version 2026-10-21, and a new claude_code.safety_event OpenTelemetry event is emitted whenever a permission rule, auto mode, safety check, hook or sandbox stops, prompts or sends back a tool call. Teams that export Claude Code telemetry can now see these interventions in one place.

Fixes worth knowing about:

  • HTTP MCP tool calls were sent twice when the connection dropped mid-call. Only read-only or idempotent tools are retried now, which matters for tools that create or modify data.
  • MCP servers no longer report "needs authentication" in claude -p on macOS when the keychain is locked.
  • Model-not-found errors with CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_1M_CONTEXT and [1m] aliases such as opus[1m] are fixed, as are "Autocompact is thrashing" errors in turns that read many PDF pages or images.
  • Conversations cleared with /clear no longer reappear after a cloud or self-hosted runner restart.

Two behavior changes to check: the axScreenReader setting and CLAUDE_AX_SCREEN_READER now apply only from user, managed or --settings sources, not from a settings env block, and self-hosted runner checkout hooks now stop after 30 minutes by default. Raise the limit with --checkout-hook-timeout-min or set it to 0 to disable the timeout.

Version 2.1.308 (October 22) lists only bug fixes and reliability improvements.

Codex, OpenCode and Copilot

The Codex releases page shows only pre-releases (0.164.0 alpha 9 to 11, plus a 0.163.0 alpha) with no notes, so there is nothing to act on yet. On the OpenCode releases page, the newest version remains 1.19.3 from October 16. GitHub's one October 21 entry, opt-in expiring, auto-refreshing OAuth tokens for GitHub CLI, is a security improvement for scripts and agents that authenticate through gh, though it is not a Copilot feature.

What to do this week

  • Update Claude Code to 2.1.308 and check self-hosted runner jobs that rely on checkout hooks longer than 30 minutes.
  • If you collect OpenTelemetry data, add the new safety_event signal to your dashboards.
  • Stay on stable Codex and OpenCode builds until the next tagged releases arrive.
