AI Coding Tools Roundup: Claude Code 2.1.302, OpenCode 1.19.3, Codex 0.164 Alphas and Copilot Model Retirements

A quieter day, but with changes worth acting on. Claude Code v2.1.302 makes fork subagents the default in non-interactive and SDK use, OpenCode v1.19.3 adds model reasoning options, the first Codex 0.164.0 alphas have started to appear, and GitHub has announced another round of Copilot model retirements. Everything below is drawn from the official release pages and changelogs linked in the references.
Claude Code v2.1.302: Fork Subagents Become the Default
Released on October 16 per the Claude Code GitHub releases and the official changelog, v2.1.302 is mostly about agent behavior.
- Fork subagents on by default: they are now enabled in claude -p, the Agent SDK, the desktop app and VS Code. Set CLAUDE_CODE_FORK_SUBAGENT=0 to opt out.
- Auto mode model choice: the new CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL variable selects the model used by the client-side auto mode classifier.
- Read tool guard: image sources over 128 MB are now refused instead of attempted.
- Fixes: plugin marketplaces no longer re-clone on every refresh, plus several cloud session issues.
If you run Claude Code in scripts or CI, the fork subagent default is the one to test: behavior in headless runs can change without any config edit on your side.
OpenCode v1.19.3: Reasoning Options Generate Variants
The OpenCode releases page lists v1.19.3 (October 16), which adds model reasoning options that generate reasoning variants. These replace catalog variants, while your own configured variant overrides are kept. It follows v1.19.2, which keeps 1.x installs on the 1.x line so moving to OpenCode 2 stays an explicit choice.
OpenAI Codex: 0.163.0 Stable, 0.164.0 Alphas Begin
0.163.0 (October 15, covered in yesterday's roundup) remains the latest stable build on the Codex releases page. Pre-release 0.164.0-alpha.1 through alpha.3 were tagged on October 16 and 17 without published notes, so there is nothing to adopt yet; keep an eye on the next stable tag.
GitHub Copilot: Model Retirements and Other Changelog Items
The GitHub Copilot changelog shows several October 15 entries, including "Upcoming deprecation of selected GitHub Copilot models in mid-November", "Agentic autofix for code scanning alerts general availability" and "HydraFusion updates and new Max option" (October 14). A third-party summary at SessionWatcher says the November 16 retirement covers Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Terra across Copilot experiences. We could not confirm those details on GitHub's own post, so read the primary entry before changing any model policy.
What to Do Today
- Scripted Claude Code users: update to 2.1.302 and run your headless jobs once; set CLAUDE_CODE_FORK_SUBAGENT=0 if behavior differs.
- Copilot admins: review the deprecation post and check which retiring models your teams pin.
- OpenCode users: update to 1.19.3 and review any variant overrides in your config.
