AI Coding News — August 31, 2026: GitHub Copilot CLI Ships v1.0.82

Yesterday's edition covered GitHub Copilot's Visual Studio update, Codex CLI's new MCP result-rewriting hooks, and OpenCode's free stealth model. Today is quieter across most of the field, but GitHub shipped a real update: Copilot CLI 1.0.82 fixes a worktree-switching bug, restores a plan-approval view, and gives clearer authentication errors. OpenAI's Codex CLI is meanwhile churning through unreleased-notes alpha prereleases, while Claude Code and OpenCode both sit exactly where they were on August 28.

GitHub Copilot CLI ships v1.0.82 with worktree and auth fixes

GitHub's Copilot CLI changelog lists version 1.0.82, published August 29, as a small quality-of-life release:

  • A message typed while /worktree or /move is preparing a worktree no longer breaks the switch into it, so you can keep typing without derailing the command.
  • Ctrl+E now expands the plan approval card back to the full plan, useful when you collapsed it and need to re-check a step before approving.
  • Authentication failures now surface the specific cause, such as "401 Bad credentials", instead of a generic sign-in prompt — a small change that saves a round trip to the docs when a token has simply expired.

It follows v1.0.81 on August 27, a bigger release that hasn't made this roundup before: support for the MCP 2026-07-28 spec across the CLI, SDK, IDE, and in-memory clients, OpenTelemetry trace context flowing through hooks, an OS authentication broker for Windows users connecting to Entra ID-protected MCP servers, xhigh reasoning effort for Grok 4.6, session restore after a crash or machine restart, and support for Gemini 3.7 Flash.

Codex CLI churns through alpha builds while stable holds at 0.151.0

OpenAI's Codex GitHub releases page shows six 0.152.0-alpha prereleases in three days — alpha.1 at 10:47 UTC on August 29 through alpha.6 at 02:12 UTC on August 31 — none carrying public release notes, which is normal for Codex's continuous prerelease channel used to stage builds before a stable cut. The stable channel remains on 0.151.0 from August 29, covered in yesterday's edition, which let extensions inspect and rewrite MCP tool results before they reach the model.

Claude Code and OpenCode hold steady

Anthropic's Claude Code changelog still tops out at v2.1.251 from August 28 — the model-switch hooks and prompt-cache reporting covered earlier this week remain the newest features. OpenCode is likewise parked at v1.18.25, also from August 28, which fixed Azure authentication so Azure CLI sign-in works without requiring Bun.

What it means for developers

If you use Copilot CLI heavily with /worktree or /move, update to 1.0.82 to stop losing keystrokes mid-switch, and if you skipped 1.0.81, its MCP spec bump and Entra ID auth broker are worth reviewing before your next Windows-based MCP setup. Codex CLI users should stay on the 0.151.0 stable release for now — the alpha builds are unreleased-notes prerelease channel churn, not a signal to switch. Claude Code and OpenCode users have nothing new to act on beyond what earlier editions already covered.
