Originally launched in January 2012 as vokoscreen for Linux, the project underwent a significant overhaul beginning in mid-2017. The goal was to create a version compatible with both Linux and Windows using the Qt and GStreamer frameworks. After over two years of development, vokoscreenNG was released for Linux in December 2019 and for Windows in January 2020.

The source code for vokoscreenNG is hosted on GitHub, and the project welcomes contributions, including translations through Transifex.
